about the magazine

My music magazine.

My music magazine is aimed at 17-18 year olds who enjoy listening to electronic and metal music. My magazine is about meeting the readers music needs by up dating them on band tour dates and other information (interviews, band blogs, posters, tips on starting a band, local bands/new music, band wear and fashion, band advert and signing dates). The magazine is a way to help new music find its feet by finding fans and possible record label deals.

front cover draft one

This was a draft front cover to see how a cartoon on the front cover with a person (with or without a mask on) would look. I quite like the idea but i think i would have to try it with the actual image i would be using to see if it would work or not.

idea 4 (make-up idea's)

First idea was to use make up to give effect of a bruise to give the model a rebellious and rock look. It was also one of the ideas i liked when looking at band photo shoots.

I also like the idea of using natural make-up as its not distracting but also looks really nice.
Another idea i  thought of using was really bright make up to bring attitude to the photo and to make it stand out more.

idea 3

                                                     Photos by Jessica Campbell

For my front cover or contents page i was thinking about using photo's i have taken from gigs I've been to. I like this idea because it relates to what the magazine is about and that the live pictures will be good to use on gig review pages. Also it gives a personal element to the magazine as someone would of had to go to the gig to take the photo's. The images also get people who haven't been to gigs want to go and experience it for themselves.

idea two (photo shoot)

Photo taken by Jessica Campbell
I quite like the idea of using a mask in my photo shoot as its strange and playful. The mask will also help get attention as it will make the magazine stand out from the rest, it also gives it an Alice in wonderland look. Another reason I like the mask is because you can't tell who's wearing it unless the magazine tells you, giving the reader more reason to pick it up and read the magazine to see who's underneath the mask.

magazine name ideas

idea one

I decided that an idea i would like to do would be to have a cartoon likeness image of a artist to give the magazine an interesting look. Once i had finished drawing the image i scanned the picture and opend it in photoshop where i coloured it in. The finished image is below.

My idea came from the Drop Dead book where they have cartoon versions of themselves side by side, which gives it a quite comical and unique look to the book.
Below are some examples.

NME Front Cover Analysis

Textural Analysis: Key Words And Terms (Magazine front cover)

All media products are called texts. When you read/watch/play/listen to a media text, you make meaning of the images/sounds before you. This process is called Decoding (Barthes media theorist). The colour red is a code for love and anger. The colour black is a code for death.

These codes are agreed on by particular groups in society depending on the culture of that society. The word connotes is used instead of symbolise in media.
The codes used in adverts, radio jingle and film trailers follows rules that we understand.

Media texts follow the conservations of that particular product. The conventions are based on our cultural belief systems.

analysis of my college magazine

Front Cover:

when designing my magazine front cover i wanted it to look really profestional. In the end i had to change some of the ideas from my flat plan as i didn't have time to arrage everything before the dead line.
I really don't like the font on the cover of my magazine because they clash and really don't go together, the reason for this is because i couldn't find the same font or a similar one to go on the front cover. This will help me as next time i will remeber to take notes of what font im useing and for what they are being used.
also when doing my background image i took the picture in landscape inside of Portrait which was needed to cover the whole background which was my aims. instead i had to change my plan so that there was a bar at the top and bottom of the magainze making it look less messy. also for next time i think i should pick a colour theme so it dosn't look so rushed.

Contents page:

i never really had a plan for my contents page but if i was to re-do it i think i would put more effort into the design. i really like my contents page but it a bit too dark making it hard to read. i also really like the texed used but when i went back later i couldn't find it again so i would have to keep notes on everything i use.

looking at college magazines

This college magazine is set out the same as many magazines it has a masthead at the top, main image, cover lines, lead article and a pull quote. the main features of the magazine are mainly about health (sex life, drugs, dieting ect.) The appeal of this magazine is that it quite bright and friendly look, another thing that is appealing is that the storys are realted to every day life. The storys and titles are clear to read and in an easy langage suitable for everyone.

Outline unlike the other magazine only has a masthead and a lead article, but it does has a skyline which the first magazine didn't have. withing this skyline it tell you about the main subjects within the magazine. The main features of this magainze is music and the up coming gigs. This appeals to all ages as it keeps you up to date on the music scene but at the same time most of the gigs and venus have age limits. music plays a part in everybodys life as it is everywhere this also helps the appeal.

Inspired

Tyler shields photo shoots was inspiration for my front cover because the way he uses lighting and the models give the images a natural and elegant look. Shield has also been well known for making some kind of statements in his images. His work mostly has an alternative look, for example: in one of his photo he has a picture of Mickey Mouse with a gun.

Results to the question

This is the question I sent out to the public to find out what people want in a college magazine. I put the survey monkey link to this question on face book and sent people emails with the link. I used face book because I could get a big audience to answer it, as it gives a bigger range of answers.

This questionnaire will help me with deciding what to subject to use in the magazine and it will help to determine what will grab my target audience’s attention.

(Underneath are the replies to the other comments.)

College Magazine Masthead

This is my college magazine masthead. I used the white on the box fount because i think it is suitable for the age group of college students, also it is easy to read.

Analysis Of A Front Cover

Kerrang is a music magazine that looks at the up and coming bands. As well as focusing on  the rise and falls of current heavy metal, rock and other closely related genres of music.Kerrang is targeted at teenagers and young adults who enjoy Punk, Rock, Heavy metal, Crunk and Screamo.
On the front cover of the magazine neutral and bright colours are used, this mix of colours make certain parts of the cover jump out and grab your attention. The main image reminds people of  a super hero (like superman) this links in with the the lead article. The image also gives a kind of playful feel to the magazine.
Just above the lead article they have a pull quote 'We're a REAL band' this effects the viewer by making them want more information on the reason for the statement.
The way the picture and writing is placed gives the magazine a 3D look, this also helps grab the readers attention.
The magazine uses a skyline which mentions a competition to win tickets to a gig this helps both the band and magazine as they are reaching out to the fans of Pearl Jam and Kerrang giving the magazine and band a possible bigger audience.
